Tip Calculator FAQ

Common questions about calculating tips and splitting bills

General

Standard tip percentages vary by country and service quality. In the US, 15-20% is typical for restaurants, 10-15% for delivery, and 15-18% for taxis. Adjust based on service quality - excellent service deserves 20-25%, while poor service might warrant 10-15%.

This depends on local customs and personal preference. In the US, it's common to tip on the pre-tax amount, but many people tip on the total including tax. Our calculator uses the total bill amount you enter, so you can choose your preference.

Group Dining

Enter the total bill amount and the number of people in your group. The calculator will automatically divide the tip and total amount equally among all people. Each person pays the same amount regardless of what they ordered.

Custom Tips

Use the 'Custom Tip Amount' field to enter a specific dollar amount instead of a percentage. This is useful when you want to leave a round number or have a specific amount in mind.

Service Types

Different services have different standard tip rates: Restaurants (15-20%), Delivery (10-15%), Taxis (15-18%), Hair salons (15-20%), Hotels (15-20%). Use our calculator with the appropriate percentage for each service type.

Service Quality

While tipping is generally expected, you can adjust the percentage based on service quality. For poor service, you might tip 10-15% instead of the standard 15-20%. However, consider that servers often share tips with kitchen staff.
